Duty Free

If you like traveling and getting good prices on merchandise, don’t forget that one of the best places to shop is duty free and tax free stores in airports. Many people like to buy gifts here, as well as purchase necessities that they did not carry with them when traveling. Although you may forget about this resource, duty free shops around the world help customers save money.

What exactly does duty free mean? Because you are between countries when shopping in these stores, duty free stores sell items that are much less expensive and you are not required to pay taxes on these items. Usually, duty free shops are found in airports in customs, but you can also find them in train and bus stations on the borders of certain countries. Because these shops are technically not associated with any country, the owners do not pay certain taxes as you’ll find in a regular store, and the savings is passed on to you.

Duty free shopping can also happen en route to your destination, especially if you are part of a first-class flight or chartered flight. The items sold here are usually extremely expensive, like jewelry and watches, but it makes sense. Think about it—you don’t have to pay for taxes, so you are saving a large chunk of money. Many travelers are also enticed to splurge because they are on vacation and want to have a good time or because they want to bring a gift home with them.

There are certain places where duty free shopping does not exist, unfortunately. For example, the European Union does not allow duty free shopping between countries that are part of this organization, only when the final destination is a non-European Union country. In most other parts of the world, however, you can still find duty free shopping, and it is a great resource if you like spending money while on vacation and want to save a little cash by not paying taxes.
